FF16 trailer could show off the next Final Fantasy game in October

Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida says the next FF16 trailer could be released in October, giving fans another look at the next entry in one of the best fantasy game series. The announcement was made at the Japan Game Awards during the Tokyo Game Show. We already knew there would be no Final Fantasy 16 at TGS, but the upcoming game did win the “Future Division” award at the show.

While receiving the award on stage on behalf of Square Enix, Yoshida was asked when fans would next hear about Final Fantasy 16, with new information previously promised to arrive in the fall (found at 47:50 in this video – note the Japanese language).

Yoshida responded (via Gematsu) that he hasn’t had a chance to talk to the FF16 marketing or PR team recently, so he’s not sure how much he can say. However, he did say, “We’ll probably release a trailer in the next month or so …… And after that, I hope to be able to give an approximate release date.”

Previously, the trailer shown at Sony’s State of Play Live in June set the release date window for Final Fantasy 16 as “Summer 2023.” Since then, Yoshida confirmed that players will control protagonist Clive and have the opportunity to experience the Final Fantasy 16 summons known as Eikons firsthand. However, he noted that other party members will be driven by AI “to allow players to focus entirely on controlling Clive.”

Recent reviews of the Final Fantasy 16 story suggest that it may revolve around the fight for the Aether, one of Final Fantasy’s main energy sources, described by Yoshida as similar to magical oil.

Meanwhile, Yoshida’s other major game, FFXIV – one of the best MMOs on PC – is preparing its next narrative arc, and Yoshida says the story planning process for FFXIV 7.0 is now complete.
