He got an unexplained $250,000 payment from Google. The company says it was a mistake

A Google sign on a building on the company’s Mountain View, California, campus in 2019. The company says it mistakenly sent $250,000 to a security engineer.

Sam Curry, a self-described hacker who said he mysteriously got $249,999 from Google last month, said he doesn’t know why the tech giant simply handed over $250,000.

“Google randomly sent me $249,999 and it’s been a little over 3 weeks and I still haven’t heard anything about a support ticket. Is there any way to get in touch with @google?” Curry tweeted a screenshot of the deal on Tuesday.

He added: “If you don’t want it back, that’s OK too ……”

Curry, a staff security engineer at Yuga Labs, told NPR that he sometimes does bug bounties for companies, including Google. That’s when people get paid to help companies and other organizations find vulnerabilities in their software.

But he said he couldn’t figure out the connection between hunting for vulnerabilities for Google and the amount of money dumped in his bank account.

Curry could spend the money, but he says he’s just holding onto it in case Google tries to get it back. If Google took too long to get to him, he said, he might have to move the cash to a separate account to avoid paying taxes on it.

Ultimately, Curry speculated, Google probably paid him inadvertently. Turns out he was right.

In a statement to NPR, a Google spokesperson said.” Our team recently made a payment to the wrong party that was the result of human error. We appreciate that the affected partners quickly informed us of the situation and we are working to correct it.”

The company intends to get the money back, the spokesman said.
For his part, Curry said he was curious about how often things like this happen at Google and what systems the company has in place to check for similar errors.

As of Thursday afternoon, he said he still had the money in his account.
