Joe Biden says what the data is telling us is that the COVID-19 pandemic is over

A man in the stands wears a mask before Dr. Anthony Fauci throws out the first pitch at a baseball game between the Seattle Mariners and the New York Yankees in Seattle on August 9. Fauci is President Biden’s chief medical advisor and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

In an interview with 60 Minutes on Sunday, President Biden said that the COVID-19 pandemic is a thing of the past.

“This pandemic is over,” he said. We still have problems with COVID. We are still working on a lot of things. But the pandemic is over. I noticed that no one is wearing masks. I think things are changing because everyone seems to be doing pretty well, and the Detroit Auto Show, which is back after a three-year absence, is a good example of that.”

His comments come as Biden’s own administration is asking Congress for $22.4 billion in additional funding to continue the fight against COVID, which still causes hundreds of related deaths every day in the United States.

So is there really no problem?

The U.S. National Institutes of Health defines an epidemic as “an outbreak of a disease or other health condition that occurs over a large area (multiple countries or continents) and usually affects a significant portion of the population.”

Approximately 612 million people worldwide are infected with coronaviruses. According to Our World in Data, an international organization of scientists, the number of new infections per day peaked in January in many countries, including the United States (806,987), France (366,554) and India (311,982).
Since then, we have come a long way. On Saturday, there were about 493,000 cases worldwide, but many estimates are probably wrong, as thousands of cases are still being found every day and many more go unreported.

From August 16 to September 17, there were 19.4 million new cases worldwide, with particularly marked increases in Japan (29%), Taiwan (20%), and Hong Kong (19%). In the United States, the number of cases increased by 3% during this period, equivalent to 2.5 million cases.

Japan has a daily cap on the number of visitors and prohibits individual tourism, but this guideline is expected to be overturned in the near future. Also, according to the Nikkei, on September 7, the requirement to be tested within 72 hours of landing in Japan was lifted as long as one has been vaccinated.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also eased restrictions on COVID-19, issuing the same guidelines for vaccinated and unvaccinated persons and reducing the quarantine period from 10 days to 5 days. Nevertheless, it has not publicly stated that the pandemic is over.

Public health experts are not impressed with the president’s words. Dr. Megan Laney, director of Brown University’s School of Public Health, countered Biden with one of his favorite quotes, calling the idea that the pandemic is over “nonsense.”

“Is this pandemic different? Of course it is.

We have vaccines and infection-induced immunity. There are treatments. There are tests (as long as they last). The mortality rate has been greatly reduced. So the response is different.

But more than that? 400 deaths per day?

I think that is nonsense.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, Biden’s chief medical advisor and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in an interview Monday that “if we are going to be able to, quote, ‘live with the virus,’ we know we can’t eradicate it as much as we should because We are not making progress,” he said.
He added, “We hope that further variations will appear.

He said, “And another paradox of this problem is that in this country we cannot accept in a unified way the interventions that are available.”
