Moscow – Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor and the whistleblower has become a Russian citizen. The news was confirmed by a decree issued by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the news in a decree posted on the Kremlin’s website on Monday.
Snowden first came to Russia in 2013 after leaking secret documents revealing the U.S. government’s vast surveillance network at home and abroad. The Kremlin then offered him asylum, despite the fact that he was accused by the U.S. of spying.
In 2020, Snowden announced that he and his wife had applied for Russian citizenship because they were expecting their first child during the pandemic.
The whistleblower maintained and defended the Kremlin’s recent actions in Ukraine. He said his views are no longer “useful” because he erroneously claimed that U.S. intelligence agencies were flawed in predicting Russian attacks on its neighbors.
