WoW’s Classic devs feel the “pressure” of its legacy

WoW Wrath Classic is expected to be remastered to be arguably the best chapter in the ongoing story of the MMO, and the developers at Blizzard understand that they have to get it right.
When we spoke with lead technical designer Kris Zierhut (who worked on the original WoTLK) and game producer Joshua Greenfield, they told us how important Wrath Classic is to the development team.
“We felt a lot of pressure to make this game as good as possible,” Zierhut said, and Greenfield nodded repeatedly. Remembering how much fun he had with his friends the first time around, he hopes the same will be true this time around.
“I have friends that I play with, like my guild mates and raiders, that I talk to every day, and I feel a lot of pressure because they rely on it,” Greenfield said.
“There is pressure to make it great, but there is also confident that we can make it great because working on ‘Rage’ for the first time has helped us understand what we want to do and how to make it work.” He continued.” There is a lot of pressure, but I am confident that what we are releasing is a great game.”
Greenfield agrees.” We have a lot of people like Kris helping us, and we have people on the World of Warcraft team who have been involved with the game since it was still in existence. This helps a lot when discussing design intent and direction, as well as being able to get to the source. It gives me a lot more confidence in such a daunting task.
It’s no secret that for many World of Warcraft players, Wrath is the pinnacle of WoW. Featuring an engaging storyline, great visuals and music, and the hugely popular Death Knight class, the Lich King and Scourge have gone down in history as WoW’s most notorious enemies.
Although I didn’t join the WoW community until much later, “Wrath” was one of the first expansions I leveled up with Chrometime when it was released in the Shadowlands. I had heard that it was very good, and it did not disappoint. So when the beta version of WoTLK Classic arrived, it was the perfect nostalgia trip and a long-awaited return for WoW.
You will be able to return to Northrend starting September 26 in the U.S. and September 27 in the rest of the world. You can find all the release dates for Wrath of the Lich King in our dedicated article, as well as the Lich King Classic Race Guide to help you narrow down the different creatures you want to try out in Azeroth.
