Bethesda celebrates RPG anniversary: “Fallout 76” free to play

“Fallout 76” is now free to play for a week as developer Bethesda celebrates the 25th anniversary of the post-apocalyptic survival RPG with a series of giveaways, sales, and a new mission for “Fallout Shelter.”

It has indeed been a quarter of a century since the original isometric version of “Fallout” was released in 1997. Fallout 4, Fallout 3, and the seminal “Fallout: New Vegas” will be followed by the online FPS “Fallout 76,” which will be free-to-play from October 4 through October 10.

For those who have wanted to set foot in Appalachia in the past but have been put off by the expense, this is a great opportunity to experience Bethesda’s multiplayer without risk. The management game “Fallout Shelter” also received its first update in four years, and Bethesda has provided additional content, including the addition of a quest line for the series’ iconic aliens.

Other games in the Fallout series are also available on Steam, with various discounts available through October 18. Of course, while we wait for further news on Bethesda’s next big RPG or “Starfield” release date, it’s a good time to reacquaint ourselves with the developer’s free-roaming, exploration, choice-driven style. Especially if you refresh your experience with the best “Fallout 4” mods.
