Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch From Mercury Episode 2—Cursed Mobile Suit

The second episode of “Mobile Suit Gundam: Witch of Mercury” resumed without a pause after the suspense of the first episode. Slater Mercury (Kana Ichinose) defeated Gael Jeturk (Yohei Azakami) in a mobile suit showdown, but was soon detained by the authorities. What was the suspicion? They believe her air mobile armor is a Gundam and that Gundam technology is illegal. If Slater is found guilty, the aerial will be dismantled for scrap and she will be expelled from the Astycasia Technical School. Her only hope is her new “fiancé,” Miorin Rembrandt (Lynn).

The Gundam series is known for its great mechanical design and epic space battles, but like all good science fiction, it is also a vehicle for addressing social issues. In this installment of “Cursed Mobile Suits,” we explore just how much control corporations have over the galaxy, and how that control affects almost everything in the show. When other companies learn that Aerial is from Mercury, they are shocked that a planet at the bottom of the production quota can produce mobile warriors with such advanced weaponry. And when Miorin eventually questions his father about the undue influence he is having on his life, his father responds with the stern statement that only those with power deserve to shape the world.

The melodramatic nuances of the play also continue to stand out. Miorin states unequivocally that she will not marry the man her father has chosen, and when she learns that Slater is locked up, she duels for her freedom. This up-and-coming relationship is one of the reasons why “Mercury Warrior” will go down in Gundam history, as few romances have been taken as seriously as this attempt at politics and cyborgs.

The episodes themselves continue the smooth, expressive animation that Sunrise is known for.
