Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch From Mercury Episode 1—The Witch And The Bride

The “Mobile Suit Gundam” series reigns supreme in mecha anime. With dozens of series, it has had a major impact on popular culture over the years. Its influence has extended to video games, giant Japanese statues, and even Steven Spielberg movies. The latest series, “The Witch From Mercury” is a surprise that defies the norm – but that’s why it’s a good show.

The first episode, “The Witch and the Bride,” takes place in Ad Stella 122. Slater Mercury (Kana Ichinose) has just arrived at the Astycasia Technical School, which prides itself on training a new generation of mobile suit pilots. On the way, she saves the life of Miorin Rembrandt (Lynn), but it turns out that Miorin is trying to escape from Astikasia. Specifically, he is trying to escape from an arranged marriage with Asticasia’s ace pilot, Ger Jeturk (Azakami Yohei). Assuming that Asticasia’s affairs will be resolved in a mobile suit duel, Slater fights Ger for Miorin’s honor.

The Witch From Mercury is the first Gundam series to feature a female protagonist. Unlike previous Gundam protagonists, Slater is very shy and often acts without second thoughts. However, when push comes to shove, she shows great skill in piloting the Gundam Aerial. He has much in common with Midoriya Izuru. His relationship with Miorin is also a highlight, and an important love story is depicted. The ending is again a Gundam first, as it seems more oriented toward the story of Sukiyaki Yuri than the Gundam story.

Being a Gundam series, there is indeed a battle between giant robots, which is very nice. Director Ryo Ando has designed a precise scene of Gel’s Diranza and Sletta’s Aerial clashing in an arena that resembles the surface of the moon. The aerial puts a new spin on the Gundam’s iconic weapon and also has a special attack that makes the RX-78-2 look slimmer. Slater and Miorin, in particular, are a study in contrasts, as are the humans themselves. Slater’s fiery red hair and tanned skin complement Miorin’s snow-white hair and icy purple eyes.
